Malia

Malia - Heraklion Prefecture (Greece)

MALIA. Malia is a busy seaside resort on the north coast of the island of Crete. It is located about 34 kilometres east of Heraklion. Malia is comparable to Hersonissos. It is slightly smaller in size, but the nightlife is equally lively. The sandy beach of Malia is very beautiful, but very busy in high season. Malia is a real tourist resort. For young people who love entertainment and beach holidays this is the place to be! In the narrow streets and along the boulevard are many restaurants and shops. There are many luxury hotels and apartments, car and motorcycle rental, water sport facilities, banks and tourist offices with enjoyable excursions to book. Malia has one of the longest sandy beaches in Crete, it starts west of Malia, at Stalis and extends to 4 kilometres to the east. This beach is well organised with beach beds and umbrellas for rent. If the beach at Malia is too busy, you can also move to one of the smaller beaches in bays around Malia. Opposite the beach is a small island, which is easily accessible by swimming. On this island stands a church.

The Minoan Palace of Malia

Would you like to do something other than go to the beach? You can visit the archaeological site of Malia, with ruins of a Minoan palace. The palace was built about 1900 years BC. It was destroyed around 1700 BC. by an earthquake, but rebuilt immediately. The ruins which you can visit now are the remains of the latter palace. The Palace of Malia is not reconstructed, everything you see is authentic. In the archaeological museum of Heraklion, you can admire finds from the palace of Malia.
