Folegandros - Cyclades (Greece)
Folegandros. Folegandros is a small rocky island between Milos and Sikinos. Steep mountains, some sandy beaches and inviting coves are the main characteristics of this island. Folegandros is a barren island. Green is very difficult to find. This island has a typically Cycladic style - white houses and churches, the barren landscape and above all, friendly people.
Capital of the island is Chora (or Folegandros), a small town with narrow alleys, stepped walls, courtyards, wooden balconies and white churches. The castle area (Kastro) with its typical white houses with small windows, where the outer walls of the houses protect the castle area, is unique in the Cyclades.
Within walking distance of Chora, is the strikingly beautiful church of Panagia (Our Lady Church). It lies slightly higher in the south, on the slopes of a hill. The panoramic view over the huge rocks to the sea and Chora is breathtaking.
An important sight on the island is the caves of Chrisospilia (Golden Cave) with stalactites, stalagmites and traces of ancient occupation. In Ano Meria, visit the Ecological and Folklore Museum. If you want something special to eat, ask for the traditional local dish of homemade spaghetti and chicken in tomato sauce.
The port of Folegandros is Karavostasis. There are beautiful beaches here, with the exception of Karavostasis. The best beaches are Angali, and Livadi in the south and at Aghios Georgios in the north.

- Chrisospilia, a cave with beautiful formations of stalactites.
- Walking on Folegandros: Folegandros is not a very big island. It has a length of 13 kilometers (8 mi), so you could walk it in a day. Estimated walking times: Karavostasis - Chora 45 min, Chora - Angali 35 min and Chora - Ano Meria 40 min. There are several hiking and mountain trails on the island. Occasionally these path will put you on the main road, which is not so crowded, even in summer.
Festivities on Folegandros
The Assumption is celebrated on August 15. First, the icon is carried through the streets and then it travels by boat around the island.
How to get to Folegandros
You can get to Folegandros by ferry. The port of Karavostasis is connected with Piraeus, Anafi, Ios, Kimolos, Milos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Serifos, Sifnos, Sikinos, Syros and Thirasia.
