Vourvourou - Halkidiki (Greece)
Vourvourou. Vourvourou is one of the most popular resorts in Halkidiki. Vourvourou is located on the east coast of the peninsula Sithonia, 50 kilometers (31 mi) from Polygyros and 100 kilometers (62 mi) from Thessaloniki.
One hundred fifty permanent inhabitants live in the village, but in summer thousands of tourists flock to the area. Near the village are several beautiful beaches such as Livari, Galini, Fteroti, Karagatsi and Karydi. Other beaches are beach Lakara and beach Zografou.
In this area there are several campsites, making Vourvourou a favorite of campers. Opposite Vourvourou are nine small islands that complete the beautiful picture – he islands of Diaporo, Prasonisi, Ambelitsi, Peristeri, Agios Isidoros, Kalogria and Kalamonisia. These islands can be visited by boat.
Diaporo is the largest and most visited island. It has a large bay where many yachts and tourist boats cast their anchor. Both near the coast and near the islands, the sea has a beautiful turquoise color. Behind and around the village are lots of forests where you can take beautiful walks. A hike to Mount Itamos is highly recommended. In and around the village are numerous restaurants, cafés, bars and tourist shops. Vourvourou is a fishing village and in the neighborhood, the fishermen come to sell their fish. The village formerly belonged to the inhabitants of the nearby town of Agios Nikolaos. Most of the inhabitants today are engaged in tourism; other people are engaged in fishing, beekeeping, olive oil and wine production. Every year, in Vourvourou on September 8, a great folk festival is held in honor of the prophets Elias and Theonas.
