Porto Koufo - Halkidiki (Greece)
Porto Koufo. Porto Koufo is located 142 km (88 mi) from Thessaloniki and 81 kilometers (50 mi) from Polygyros. It is the largest natural harbor in Greece. Boats of all sizes can moor here safely.
It is the southernmost village of the peninsula Sithonia in the Greek prefecture Halkidiki. The whole area is known for the many good seafood restaurants. The port is very deep. During World War II the submarines of the Allies found it safe here. That’s exactly the same reason pirates hid here centuries ago. It was indeed a place where nobody could find them.
In this closed bay are several smaller bays. From a great distance or at night, you can’t see Porto Koufo at all. Lighthouses located on both sides of the closed bay of Porto, show sailors the way. The view of the bay of Porto Koufo is impressive. Around the bay are high cliffs. The bay looks more like a lake than a bay. Next to the bay there is a large lake. Koufo in Greek means “deaf.” The ancient Greeks who claimed that anyone who traveled to the middle of the bay couldn’t hear the sea gave the name. In the bay are several caves and one of these can be visited by boat.
