Fourka - Halkidiki (Greece)
Fourka. Fourka is a traditional village, 75 kilometers (47 mi) southeast of Thessaloniki and 57 kilometers (35 mi) from the capital of Chalkidiki, Polygyros. Fourka consists of the main village and the village of Skala Fourka, three kilometers (2 mi) away, on the seafront. Fourka was founded in the 16th century. Most residents are farmers and fishermen. Over the last few decades though, tourism has become very important for the economy of the area.
Fourka lies in the midst of pine forests and olive trees. In the area around Fourka there are many historic churches and ruins. The name of the beach near Fourka is Skala Fourka. Here is a small harbor where tourist boats and fishing boats moor. It is quite busy here in the summer, but not as busy as in other, more touristic resorts in Halkidiki. It is an idyllic place. It's wonderful to see how the greenery reaches to the water. On the beach all kind of water sports are possible. The sea is very shallow making it an ideal holiday destination for families with young children.
Throughout the area are hotels, as well as rooms and apartments for rent. Every year on July 16 in Fourka, a great festival is held in honor of Saint Marina. About 1,000 permanent reside in the two villages, Skala and Skala Fourka, combined.
