Kamiros

Kamiros - Rhodes (Greece)

Kamiros. Kamiros is located on the west coast of the Greek island of Rhodes, 36 kilometers (22 mi) from Rhodes town. In ancient times there were three main towns on Rhodes; Lindos, Ialyssos and Kamiros. Kamiros was the smallest of the three cities. It had an agricultural character, while Lindos was a trading town and port and Ialyssos an aristocratic town. Wine and olive oil was produced there and it was even mentioned by Homer in his books.

Today, the remains that are on display in Kamiros are that of the city which was rebuilt in the Hellenistic period about 226 BC, after a catastrophic earthquake. Before that disaster, the city has existed since the Archaic period.

In Kamiros are three distinct areas:

1. The lowest level was the area with the power and it had a religious character. Here are the marketplace, the sanctuary, a water source, the Exedra and a Doric temple dating from the third century BC.

2. The second level, with its private homes. There are houses on the slope of the hills, built amphitheatrically, one of the features of the Hellenistic period.

3. The third is the south and area atop the Acropolis and the Temple of Athena. On top was the great Stoa (covered promenade), which was 200 meters long.

A visit to Kamiros is surely worthwhile and its suggested that you combine it with a visit to the Butterfly Valley, which lies not far from here. Along the main road to Kamiros are several beautiful beaches where fresh fish can be eaten for a low price.
