Karlovassi. Karlovassi is the second largest city of the Greek island of Samos. It is located in the north-west of the island, about 34 kilometres from the capital. Karlovassi is a sprawling city, which actually consists of several districts and therefore the locals call it "The Karlovassia". One of the characteristics of Karlovassi is that various tanneries are located here and in addition there are many marine yards. Karlovassi consists actually of New Karlovassi, Middle Karlovassi and Old Karlovassi.
Karlovassi in the past has been a very rich town with great prosperity. You can see many mansions located here. It's not exactly a tourist place, rather it is a very good shopping town, with many museums and with several High Schools and Universities.
The cosiness you find in Kokkari and Pythagorion you probably will not find here. The most beautiful part of the city is the old town that is built on a hill south of the harbour. In this part, which was built in 1650 and is now called Palio Karlovassi, has the Agia Triada Church on top of the hill.
