Georgioupolis

Georgioupolis - Chania Prefecture (Greece)

Georgioupolis. (Georgioupolis in Apokoronas) is located between Chania city (40 km) and Rethymnon city (21 kilometers) to the bay of Almyros in Crete. It is a small fishing village (500 inhabitants) that has evolved over the decades into a full tourist village. It was given the name of the Prince of Crete; Georgios (late 19th century). In this place the river Almyros flows. The tall eucalyptus trees that are located here are notable. In the center of Georgioupolis is a lively village square where most of the shops are located. (baker, butcher, mini markets, cafes etc.)

That Georgioupolis has become a nice tourist spot, has to do with the long stretches of sandy beach located here. There are a lot of cafes, restaurants and tavernas along the waterfront and in recent years many large hotels have been built. The night life is pretty good and there are umbrellas and sunbeds for hire at the beach. Everything can be found here For boaters like windsurfing and pedalos. Georgioupolis is a small harbour where mostly fishing boats are built, and this explains the fact that there are good fish restaurants in the village. On August 6, there are festivals associated with music and dance. Opposite to Georgioupolis is a small rocky island with a chapel that can be reached walking via a narrow strip of land. South of Georgioupolis there is the Kournas Lake, one of the most beautiful areas in the region.

A tragic story: in May 1972, 21 girls from a secondary school in the village of Spili drowned here. Their boat trip ended in tragedy, most of them couldn’t swim. After their boat capsized, the girls became entangled in fishing nets. Since then, the bay has been known as "the bay of the 21 virgins."
