Istron (Istro). The population of Kalo Chorio in Crete, during the rise of tourism, chose to centre the tourist area in this region, near the sea. As a result, the tourist village of Istro arose and is, located some 75 km from the airport and the capital Heraklion. In Istro you will find several supermarkets, bars and good tavernas. In the winter only a few restaurants and supermarkets are open. The biggest attractions in Istro beside its quiet location are the beautiful beaches. FromThe Mirabello Bay apartments there is a pictoresque view of the Triphti Mountains. Mirabello in Italian means "beautiful view". This name has been given to the bay during the Venetian period, from 1204-1669.
9 kilometres away lies Agios Nikolaos, the capital of Lassithi. Agios Nikolaos is not too big but very lively and has two shopping streets where you will find everything you need in a tourist place. There are many tavernas, restaurants, bars and souvenir shops. The location for the inland lake around it is the most famous. But eventually you are happy to return to the quiet Istro. From the port of Agios Nikolaos, you can make boat trips to various destinations and it’s very cosy at night.
