Dionysos Theater Athens. The Dionysos Theater was built in the 6th century BC. It is located at the foot of the Acropolis on the south side, at a short distance from the Herod Atticus Theater. This theater can be reached through the Dionysou Aeropagitou street. This is the oldest theater in the world. It was built in honor of the god Dionysos, protector of dramatic art. Here the four major Greek poets have first seen their masterpieces played. (Aristophanes, Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides). The theater could seat about 15,000 spectators. In the 5th century BC, the Odeon of Pericles was built, east of the theater. The Dionysos Theater was in ancient times known for the dramatic competitions which were held here and thousands of spectators came to see it.
