Vathy. Vathy is the capital of the Greek island of Ithaki. With its red terracotta-tiled roofs, it is a picturesque town situated in a deep bay which looks more like a lake. The houses set around the port are surrounded by the green slopes of the hills. In Vathy are many traditional restaurants, fish tavernas, cafes, cafeterias, bakeries, shops, souvenir shops and other businesses. The houses are built in traditional architectural style and consist of one or two floors.
The island Lazaretto is located in the Vathy bay where in 1668 the chapel of "Sotiros" was built. On this green island are also two castles set In the middle ages where sick people were quarantined, later it was used as a prison. In Vathy there are also several beautiful churches, such as the Cathedral Church Mary with its wooden iconostasis. Furthermore, there are a lot of lovely mansions and a number of museums such as the Archaeological Museum and the Maritime Museum. Very striking is the town hall with its beautiful clock.
