Platia Ammos - Kythira (Greece)
Platia Ammos. Platia Ammos literally means "broad sand", referring to the wide sandy beach. The word says it all it is a typical Greek fishing village, in the far north of Kythira where a wide sandy beach is located. Platia Ammos lies thirty kilometres from Chora (Kythira Town), in a beautiful bay, some steps away you could almost touch the Peloponnese The distance to Peloponnese is only 11 kilometres. In the village you’ll see traditional houses, quaint shops and some good typical Greek ouzeri's. The beach of the village is very popular, it lies just behind many nice typical Greek restaurants, cafes and ouzeri's.
On the beach and on the slopes of the hills are rooms, apartments and some hotels where tourists can stay. At the beach there is a quay for fishing boats and tourist boats. Beach Platia Ammos is well organised and is one of the most popular beaches of Kythira. Many fishermen do good business because there is a great abundance of all kinds of fish. These fish of course, you can taste them at the fish tavernas and ouzeri in the village itself.
Worth seeing at Platia Ammos, at the north, is cape Moudari, home of the famous lighthouse. There is a lovely route to walk over here, the length of the route is about twelve kilometres. The dirt road is not good enough to get here by car, but with a 4X4 jeep, you might well succeed. There are also interesting churches in the area such as the church of Agios Nikolaos (slightly north) and the church of Agios Prokopios a few hundred meters from the beach.
