Mitata - Kythira (Greece)
Mitata. Mitata is a small village 18 kilometres north of Kythira town (Chora), in the heart of the island of Kythira. It is a village located in a beautiful area, surrounded by many vineyards and olive groves. There are many water sources, therefore the area is also very fertile. Mitata is well known for producing good wine, each year wine festivals are held in the month August. Mitata is one of the oldest villages of Kythira, old documents mention the village already in the twelfth century. This village used to be a big crowded village, unfortunately, most young people left to live in larger cities that’s why Mitata looks quite deserted.
In the middle of Mitata is the village square where a café is located and the ancient church of Agia Triada with its blue dome. West of Mitata is the Tsakonas gorge, around the village are several interesting caves. Mitata is located quite high above sea level, therefore from here you have a fantastic view over the island. Mitata is also known because of the foundation "adopt a cat" from the Dutchwoman Irene. In her home, she hosts at least twenty cats you recognise the cat paws painted on the road surface.
