Diakofti - Kythira (Greece)
Diakofti. Diakofti is a tourist resort in the east of Kythira, about 25 kilometres from Chora and from Aghia Pelagia. When you arrive in Diakofti from above, first thing you see, is the intense turquoise colour of the sea; it is impressive! The beach slopes gradually downwards, the water is shallow. Here in Diakofti is the port of Kythira located. Ferries from Piraeus, Souda (Crete) and Neapoli (Peloponnese) moor here. Diakofti is very popular because of the beautiful white sandy beach and shallow turquoise sea.
Right across the village is the 'bare' islet Makronisi (or Makrokythira) located which is connected with Diakofti by a bridge. Around this islet many snorkelers come swimming. It’s also ideal for walking. In the village, near the beach, are various seafood restaurants, tavernas and cafes. It's pure pleasure sitting on one of the tavernas at the beach, between the whitewashed trees, tasting delicious Greek dishes and wine! East of Diakofti is the cave Chousti located, which covers an area of 800 sq. meters and is up to fifteen meters deep. In this cave vases and other objects from classical antiquity and the Roman period were found.
It is alleged that in this cave people have been living since 3800 BC. At the coast near Diakofti are several caves that are only accessible by boat. Just behind Diakofti, on a mountain, is the monastery of Agia Moni located, which was built in 1840 and is dedicated to Jesus Christ. Between the village of Diakofti and Avlemonas is the Byzantine church of Agios Georgios with a mosaic dating from the seventh century. Opposite to Diakofti, is the island Prasonisi, where in 2000 a merchant vessel (Nordland) was stranded. This ship is still there and has become a sort of tourist attraction.
