Plaka - Milos (Greece)
Plaka. Plaka is the capital of Milos, one of the most picturesque areas on the island. Plaka is not a city but a village. It lies on a plateau atop a hill, less than five kilometers (3 mi) from Adamas. Plaka, along with the villages Trypiti, Triovasalos, Pera Triovasalos and Plakes form a large central village.
In Plaka and the surrounding villages you can see the Cycladic architecture of the houses – white houses with blue doors and windows. Plaka is near the ruins of the Venetian castle that once protected the residents against pirate attacks. The Venetian castle dates from the Middle Ages, around the time Plaka was founded. Residents of the ancient capital, Zefyria, then settled here for safety reasons. From above, the inhabitants could see enemy ships at quite a distance, allowing plenty of time to take action. Because of the population growth at the main center of Plaka in the 19th century Plaka became the capital of the island.
At the other end of Plaka is the village of Trypiti. “Trypa” means hole and the name comes from the village being built on the many holes in the soft rocks on the mountain. The history of Trypiti dates back to Classical Greek ancient time when people first lived here.
