Agioi Anargiri. Agioi Anargiri is a church on the west coast of the Greek island of Alonissos, seven kilometres north of Patitiri. The stone built church with grey tiles, is located high on the steep cliffs of a mountain on the coast. The view from above is breathtakingly beautiful.
Agioi Anargiri is situated in the middle of a forest, you cannot come here by car. Park your car at the edge of the forest and follow the narrow walking path through pine forests and other conifers.
According to tradition, it was the intention that this church would have been built on a different spot. But every time the icon disappeared from that spot it was found again on another spot. Thus, they decided to build the church there. Monks used to live next to it in cells at the time it was still a small monastery. The monastery was under the control of the big Megisti Lavra monastery on the Holy Mount Athos in Chalkidiki.
Agioi Anargiri once was destroyed by major earthquakes. The inhabitants of Alonissos, however, repeatedly renovated the church. Next to the old church one has built a second church that really stands out, because of the white walls and red roof.
