Velvendo - Kozani (Greece)
Velvendo. Velvendo is a very picturesque village in the east of the Kozani Prefecture. It lies on the slopes of the Pieria Mountains, east of the Polifitos Lake. Velvendo, located in the Aliakmon valley, is one of the prettiest villages in the region. It is a picturesque village with houses built in traditional Macedonian style. In the Byzantine period many rich people and leading figures from the Byzantine, spent their old age here. Witnesses are the many Byzantine churches, such as the church of Agios Nikolaos with its beautiful paintings.
The inhabitants of the village were, and still are, farmers by profession and the fruits they produce are often exported abroad. Around the village you will notice all kinds of fruit trees. Vineyards, apple orchards, plane trees and peach trees surround Velvendo.
Velvendo is a scenic village with narrow streets and well-kept houses that were built in the late 19th century or early 20th century. In the village are nice terraces where it is very pleasant to enjoy a drink, both in summer and winter.
From Velvendo you can make mountain hikes to the Pieria Mountains and through several picturesque mountain villages. One of the most beautiful places to hike is the falls and the gorge Skepasmeno (Lafista Gorge or Gorge of 9 Muses). According to Greek mythology, the 9 Muses took a bath in the small lakes formed by the falls.
Nowadays, the mountain area around Velvendo has become very popular especially among mountaineers. In the village Katafygi, which lies on a plateau at 1400 meters (4600 ft) altitude, the famous Alexis Zorbas (Zorba the Greek) lived in his younger years.
