Tholaria - Amorgos (Greece)
Tholaria. Tholaria is a mountain village, located two kilometers (a little more than a mile) from the port of Aigiali in Amorgos. The village consists of beautiful, whitewashed Cycladic architecture. Here you see the typical blue doors and windows that you encounter on other islands in the Cyclades.
A walk through the narrow streets is a must. The view from above the bay of Aigiali is very beautiful. The village has a hotel, and there are rooms for rent. Most residents are farmers and the main product grown here is fava (split peas). Because the land is hilly, over the years the islanders have created fertile flat areas by walling it with stones. You’ll see many of these agricultural fields on the mountain slopes of the island.
In Tholaria you’ll find many nice taverns, cafeterias and bars. On summer evenings it is very busy. Opposite Tholaria is the Vigla hill. Here you can see the ruins of ancient Aigiali, one of the three city-states of antiquity.
