Patras - Achaia (Greece)

Patras. (Patra) The third largest city of Greece and the largest in the Peloponnese. It  is also the capital of the department of Achaia. It is a busy port and trading city. If you are traveling from Italy to Greece, it is likely that you will arrive at the port of Patras. The port of Patras is one of the most important ports in Greece.

Patras is known for its extensive and lively carnival. Patras is 3000 years old and was founded by the Achaeans in 1800 BC. During the independence war, the Turks destroyed the city.  The city was rebuild in the 19th century and the rectangular way of the streets emerged.

The Agios Andreas church  in Patras is a modern basilica in Byzantine style and stands on the site where the Apostle Andrew would have been put to death. St Andrew is the patron saint of the city, he brought Christianity early to Patras. The so-called St. Andrew's Cross is named after him. (an x-shaped cross ) On November 30 , the feast of Saint Andrew is held.

Near Patras is located the Rio-Antirio bridge. This is the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world. This bridge connects the Peloponnese with the mainland.
