Palaiochora - Aegina (Greece)

Palaiochora. Palaiochora is located on the Greek island of Aegina. Palaiochora literally means "old capital" which it was,until it was ruined in the Middle Ages by pirates in the year 1537.

At the top of the hill are the remains of a Byzantine castle and in the surroundings the remains of many Byzantine churches. It is said that there were 565 such churches in the Middle Ages.

In Palaiochora is the monastery of Agios Nektarios, the patron saint of Aegina. The monastery of Agios Nektarios is also mentioned  in the monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity).

Each year thousands of Christians visit the tomb of the saint.
