Mesochori - Karpathos (Greece)
MESOCHORI. (Messochori). Mesochori is located on the west side of the Greek island of Karpathos, in about the middle. Its name comes from Messi = middle, Chori = country.
It is located approximately 34 kilometers (21 mi) from Pigadia, the capital of Karpathos. The village is slightly elevated, so it offers a wonderful view of the sea. The two bays at Mesochori are separated by a small cape and high cliffs protect bays from the wind.
The village consists of beautiful white houses, which are built close together. A green environment surrounds the village. Narrow streets, stone strapping, courtyards decorated with flowers and plants, houses built in traditional style, squares and beautiful churches are the signature of Mesochori. The main church of the village is the Panagia i Vrissiani (Our Lady of the Fountain). It was built over a spring, which explains the name. This spring is an important water supply for the village.
Another important church in Mesochori is the Aghios Giannis o Prodromos (St. John the Baptist). The harbor of Kafkalos is below Mesochori. For a long time the road to Mesochori was not passable and therefore to this day the traditions and customs have been preserved in the village, similar to the village of Olympos.
Mesochori is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. The wine is well-known for its high quality. The people of the village depend heavily on agriculture. The sunset in Mesochori is breath-taking and is in itself reason enough to visit this charming village.
