Ermoupolis - Syros (Greece)

Ermoupolis. Ermoupolis is the capital of the Greek island of Syros. This town is built in the middle of the eastern coast of Syros and is characterized by many neoclassical buildings and beautiful architectural monuments. Ermoupolis, a town with a current population of 12,000, was one of the main cultural, economic and maritime centers of Greece in the 19th century. After the revolt against the Turks in 1821, Greeks from Asia Minor, and various islands, such as Chios and Psara, settled here.

At the end of the 19th century, 110 factories were functioning in Ermoupolis demonstrating the city’s role in Greek employment and economy at that time. During this period, hundreds of neoclassical buildings were built, a testament to the prosperity of the city. Today, these buildings still stand and are beautiful.

In the heart of Ermoupolis is Miaoulis Square. This is the meeting place for young and old, with many cafeterias and restaurants. The square is named after admiral Miaoulis, whose statue stands at the square. On the square is also a marble podium and stage from the 19th century which is still used for concerts and other activities. Next to the square stands the impressive municipal building, which looks like a royal palace, rather than a town hall! German architect Ernst Ziller built this building entirely of marble in the period 1876-1889. Another impressive building is the Apollo Theater, built in 1862 by the Italian architect Pietro Sampo. This theatre is a miniature of "La Scala" in Milan.

Ermoupolis consists of several neighborhoods. One is Vaporia meaning steamer in Greek. Located to the right of the port, this area’s houses are built adjacent to the sea and therefore this district is called "Little Venice of Syros."

Ermoupolis is home to one of the largest shipyards in Greece (Neorio). This shipyard was established in the year 1862. In Ermoupolis you’ll find many beautiful churches such as the Church of Evangelistria, a Catholic church, and the Church of the Resurrection (Anastasi) of Jesus Christ, built on top of the same hill.
