Schinoussa. Schinoussa is a very small island south of Naxos, it lies between the other small islands Iraklia and Koufonissia. The inhabitants of Schinoussa are originally from the island of Amorgos. The inhabitants are mostly farmers, herders and fishermen.
On this island it is very quiet, there are three hamlets where people live; Panagia, Mersini and Mesaria. The port of Schinoussa is Mersini, it is located one and a half kilometre from the capital Panagia (Chora of Schinoussa).
Panagia is a picturesque village with whitewashed houses and narrow alleyways. In Panagia are traditional Greek cafes, taverns and many shops.
Schinoussa is an island with low hills. The highest peak is "Mylos" which is only 133 meters high. It is an island that is not as touristy, although there are rooms and hotels available.
People who love walking, should come here a few days to overnight. Staying more days, could be boring unless you're looking for the absolute quietness and rest.
The main attraction of the island is the church of Panagia tis Akathis. Furthermore on the island, there is an ethnological museum and you can see the remains of a castle from the Middle Ages.
Although Schinoussa is very small (9 sq.km.), on the island are strikingly beautiful beaches, there are about fifteen. These are the beaches Psili Ammos, Almyros, Fonta, Tsigouri, Lioliou, Portokali, Livadi, Alygaria, Bazeou, Pori, Gero Limnioans etc.
The most beautiful beaches are in the south, they almost all are sandy beaches.
If you want to stay on the island, there are small hotels and rooms for rent.
Next the coast of Schinoussa there are number of smaller islands, like Fidou, Aspronisi and Agrilou.
